COMPOSTING is the most important part of our gardening!
My husband & I have SIX compost bins (the SAFE kind that animals can’t get into).

- We have a ‘Compost Caddy’ IN the kitchen, it holds about 2 litres of veggie & fruit peelings;
- We empty this into the Bins when needed – adding some water & dirt now & then.
- Stirring the compost Bins helps – you can get a special Fork for this at the Hardware store.

We didn’t buy ANY store-bought fertilizer and our veggies are growing as good as or Better than other gardens that use them. PLUS, our garbage isn’t uckky or smelly!

Makes us feel so good to be somewhat self-sufficient / recycling … easy, common-sense things that generations before us did naturally, hardly even thinking about it.
- In two-three generations we lost our GARDENING SENSE!
- And we should WANT IT BACK!

I love that you posted the picture of your first tomato! There was major celebration at our house last night. We pulled three black romas out of the garden and dinner was a big deal! The kids love to dig in the dirt and the payoff when we get to eat from the backyard is just such a great bonus.

My neighbor has a watermelon plant with a baby melon on it the size of an egg- it is really adorable! My kids are excited to grow a watermelon, this is a new one for us!

i love the idea of planting a garden but don’t know if my back yard soil will sustain vegetables.
can you offer guidance on how to start one, and what to purchase, for best results?

I love tomatoes! I too picked some tomatoes today from out backyard: some yellow, and some red cherry tomatoes, and made tomato sandwiches for lunch. Delicious!

Thank you for posting this picture, and I can’t wait to see the rest of your garden! We are growing tomatoes, beans, corn, cucumbers, radishes, eggplants, and lots of herbs. Every morning my kids rush outside to check how much the plants have grown overnight! We eat pesticide-free veggies and the kids learn a lot about science!
