The Power of NOW!

hourglassThe pre-holiday-season often means frantic rushing.  Frenzied running.  High anxiety levels.  Hectic days and wired nights.

It need not be this way- just read the next few sentences for a 180 degree mindset shift!

The gift of the present tense is that “now” is never as bad as the future we anxiously awaited.  The apprehension we feel about what is around the bend is always far worse than the time when the moment of truth arrives.

This is the gift of being in the NOW.  The trick is living in that split-second where the sand in the top of the hourglass shifts through the mid-point of the PRESENT into the bottom of the glass, which holds the past.

NOW is always bearable, and most often extremely pleasant.  It is the suspense of wondering what the future may bring that ruins the beauty and serenity of the present moment.

That’s not to advise throwing caution to the wind and abandoning advance planning!  Far from it!  Rather, living in the present moment means being aware of the life force that exists within our breath at this very second- as opposed to distress regarding the upcoming breaths that have yet to occur.

For more information about living in the NOW and letting go of nervousness about the future, read “The Power of Now” by Eckart Tolle- it just may change your life.   Right now!

Thanks, Ellen, I needed this very badly! I’m in the mall with my 2 teen girls, waiting outside the fitting rooms and just got this article- wow- putting things in perspective!!

yes, perfect timing, but no time for me to elaborate….

One of my favorite quotes speaks to this issue, that I frequently need to be reminded of:

Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, today is a gift – that’s why we call it the PRESENT!

The best way that I can put it is like this, “I’ll worry about tomorrow, when tomorrow gets here!” Thanks Ellen.

Very appropriate as I am scheduled for surgery tomorrow. My family has gathered at my house to support me and I am trying to “live in the moment and letting go of the nervousness of the future”. THe present moment is all we really have. Thanks, Ellen.

Living in the NOW constitutes what it really means to be a human BEing vs. a human DOing. So don’t just do something, sit there for a moment(mindfully) and enjoy!

I’ve been a subscriber to your email newletter for years and have always found it uplifting and helpful. Living in the now is a wonderful sentiment for any time of year, but I am grieved to see that you are promoting the modern-day cult espoused by Tolle! Oh my!

      Dear Oh my!
I used to think all that positive talk was hokey too – when I didn’t fully understand. As effective parents / educators would it be wise to only rely on one method of care / teaching practice? So, if you can BE a little different, try something new, breath well and enjoy life fully then maybe Tolle doesn’t speak to you at this point in life. With stress accounting for some 90% of illnesses, I’d rather ride the healthy train… I like BEing healthy ‘cause DOing healthy just didn’t cut it anymore:-)

  8. I have had crisis in relationships but have chosen to keep on meeting those I had had a conflict with (relatives), because it is better than burning bridges and abstaining from connection for 30 years, while a heavy weight bears you down. I wish everyone could alleviate and expell the hurt and pain caused them by others. Let the ego go – it is extremely hard – and the pride, and just as everyone above has said: live in the present. Much healthier, and happier that way. leave the past in the past. Get on with your lives from this moment. I bless God for the colors and flowers in the world. I think they were created for our souls and well being. Look at them again, now, and think about it. Look after yourselves. You are just as important as the next being.
